The Restaurant Association has played a pivotal role in shaping the UK’s hospitality landscape since its inception in 1967. From the early days, when the UK’s culinary scene was still discovering its identity, to the present, the Association has been at the forefront of the industry, championing innovation and excellence. The 1980s marked a significant period of transformation, with the introduction of initiatives like the ‘Young Chef Young Waiter’ competition, designed to attract and nurture young talent in the industry. The Association also spearheaded successful campaigns to modernise outdated licensing laws, which were a major hindrance to restaurateurs at the time.
Over the decades, the Restaurant Association has celebrated numerous milestones, including its 50th anniversary in 2018, which honoured the pioneers who laid the foundations for the UK’s thriving hospitality industry. The annual RA Gala Dinner has become a prestigious event, bringing together industry leaders, top chefs, and influencers to celebrate excellence in food and wine service. Notably, in 2019, the event raised £48,000 for The Springboard Charity and recognised three generations of the Roux family for their outstanding contributions to hospitality. As the Association continues to evolve, it remains dedicated to supporting the industry’s growth, fostering the next generation of hospitality talent, and maintaining the UK’s reputation as a global culinary leader.
Over the years, the RA Gala Dinner has welcomed some of the most illustrious names in the culinary world and beyond, establishing itself as a cornerstone event in the hospitality industry. Past guests have included legendary chefs such as Raymond Blanc OBE, Shaun Rankin, Brian Turner CBE, and Richard Corrigan, alongside celebrated figures like Francesco Mazzei, Richard Shepherd CBE, Claude Bosi, and the renowned Galvin brothers, Chris and Jeff.
The event has also attracted prominent influencers and celebrities who share a passion for exceptional food and service. Notable attendees have included model Lisa Snowdon, bestselling cookbook author Melissa Hemsley, YOU Magazine Editor Jo Elvin, and TV presenter Lucy Verasamy. The RA Gala continues to be a gathering of culinary excellence, where the finest in hospitality come together to celebrate and inspire future generations.
